Arthritis In Your Pet

Caring for your Elderly Dog

Over the years, your pet has probably become more of a family member than an animal. You have shared in life's joys together, and your relationship has grown closer and closer over time. Unfortunately, your pet will start to age before you do, with most pets becoming geriatric in their teens. Your pet will experience the same aches and pains that any geriatric person would.

Pets can experience many of the same medical conditions that humans do, especially as they age. One of the most common of these conditions is arthritis. Arthritis can affect all different breeds of cats and dogs. This can be painful for your household pets and can result in decreased activity, weight gain and difficulty getting around. Arthritis is a progressive disease, and the pain a pet experiences may worsen over time.

Although arthritis cannot be cured, the associated pain and inflammation can be treated! A veterinarian can complete a physical examination to determine how severe the condition is and recommend a treatment plan for your pet. This might include non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, pain medication, supplements, and even acupuncture! It is important to watch for the signs of arthritis as your pet ages, so you can seek out the treatment your pet needs to continue living life with the enthusiasm and energy you know and love.
