CLAVAMOX Basics

CLAVAMOX is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that uses the combined effects of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid to eliminate aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms. CLAVAMOX is effective in treating...
  • - skin and soft tissue infections from wounds and abscesses
  • - cellulitis
  • - pyoderma
  • - gum disease
  • - respiratory infections
  • - ear infections
  • - urinary tract infections

Clavulanic acid neutralizes the microorganisms, which then allows amoxicillin to be more effective in treating bacterial infections.

From Our Vets

It is hard for me to believe that CLAVAMOX is now an "older" antibiotic. We have used it over the years for a variety of bacterial infections. This drug seems to be very effective for treatment of susceptible skin infections, urinary tract infections, pneumonias and all types of soft tissue infectious processes. CLAVAMOX is a really good combination drug that has an expanded spectrum from simple amoxicillin, penicillin, or amipcillin drugs. The really good thing about CLAVAMOX is that it comes in pill and liquid form, giving you multiple routes of administration for dogs and cats. I like this product, and we use it extensively here in our practice. It is a bit more expensive than the penicillin drugs, but if your pet has a susceptible infection, it is well worth the expenditure. Don't forget the importance of doing a culture and sensitivity test on chronic bacterial infections. They can help prevent resistance from inappropriate antibiotic treatments. Your veterinarian will help explain why diagnostic tests such as cytologic analysis and cultures are frequently a necessity. Always try to find the underlying cause for a bacterial infection rather than just grabbing an antibiotic randomly.
