IV Fluids Basics

  • IV Fluids are available by prescription only.
  • Lactated ringers is an electrolyte solution that is used to help dehydrated animals replace much needed fluids and electrolytes.
  • The causes of dehydration may vary, but animals suffering from kidney disease and nausea are often treated with lactated ringers.
  • Lactated ringers is administered with a macro-drip I.V. set that is either given intravenous (I.V.) or subcutaneously with a needle (provided by your veterinarian).
