Amlodipine Compound Basics
  • Amlodipine is available by prescription only.
  • Amlodipine belongs to a general class of drugs known as dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers.
  • Amlodipine is used in dogs and cats suffering from different heart conditions that include...
  • High blood pressure
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Calcium enters the heart through calcium channels and causes the heart muscle and blood vessels to contract, making it harder to pump blood through the body.
  • Amlodipine blocks these calcium channels, which reduces the contraction of the heart muscle and dilates the arteries.
  • Amlodipine slows the heart beat, therefore lowering blood pressure and making the heart pump blood more efficiently.
  • Amlodipine is compounded in our PCAB accredited pharmacy.
  • Amlodipine compound is available in...
  • A capsule
  • An oral suspension (includes x 1 complimentary oral syringe)
  • An UNSCORED tiny tablet (cannot split)
  • A chewable treat

Amlodipine Compound Dosage FAQs
  • In the case of a missed dose, give amlodipine as soon as you remember, or wait until it is time to give the next dose. DO NOT GIVE A DOUBLE DOSE OF AMLODIPINE.
  • In the case of an overdose of amlodipine, seek attention from your veterinarian.
  • The following symptoms could be signs of an overdose...
  • dizziness
  • fainting

Amlodipine is a blood pressure medicine referred to as a calcium channel blocker. We have used it to treat hypertension in cats. (Yes, we can check your cat's blood pressure!) Once your veterinarian has established that your cat has high blood pressure and does not have signs of other serious diseases, such as cardiomyopathy or renal disease, Amlodipine is frequently the drug that will be utilized. Occasionally, inappetence will occur in cats, but it has been well tolerated in my experience. Additionally, this drug really needs to be given consistently, as missed doses can result in hypertension.
If you notice any behavioral or physiological changes in your pet while giving amlodipine, contact your veterinarian immediately.
Allergic Reactions and Serious Side Effects
  • Allergic reactions and serious side effects are rare, but in the case of an allergic reaction or serious side effect you should stop amlodipine treatment and seek veterinary attention immediately.
  • Some common signs of allergic reactions and serious side effects are...
