Artificial Tears Basics
- Artificial Tears are available over the counter. No prescription is required.
- Artificial Tears are lubricant eye drops used to treat dryness and irritation of the eye.
- Dryness and irritation associated with deficient tear production in mild to severe cases of dry eye may be treated with Artificial Tears.
- In severe cases, Artificial Tears may have to be supplemented with other treatments.
- Artificial Tears will not cure dry eyes but can provide much needed relief from symptoms of dry eyes.
- Artificial Tears are available in a 15 mL bottle.
Artificial Tears Warnings
- Keep out of the reach of children and pets.
- Long term use of Artificial Tears may harm the eye.
- The tip of the container of Artificial Tears should not touch any other surface so that the eye does not get contaminated.
- If the Artificial Tears solution changes colors or becomes cloudy, discontinue use immediately.
- If your pet's eye pain gets worse, stop using Artificial Tears and call your veterinarian.
Artificial Tears Directions
- Use Artificial Tears as directed by your veterinarian.
- Frequency of administration of Artificial Tears depends on the severity of the condition being treated.
- Wash your hands before using Artificial Tears.
- DO NOT touch the opening of the bottle with your hands, as this can spread harmful bacteria to your pet's eye.
- Keep the cap secured properly when not using Artificial Tears.
- Store Artificial Tears at room temperature.
Veterinarians frequently prescribe Artificial Tears when a pet has inappropriate tear production. The condition known as KCS, (or dry eyes), is frequently treated with Artificial Tears, Cyclosporine, and antibiotic ointments or solutions. If you have a breed that is predisposed to dry eyes, you know how important Artificial Tears are in helping manage the condition. A lot of us use Artificial Tears for our own eyes, (myself included), and know how great it makes our eyes feel. In my experience, consistent application of Artificial Tears not only makes your pet feel more comfortable, but will also help delay corneal changes associated with lack of tear production. Remember you can apply Artificial Tears to your pet's eyes as frequently as you would like without any danger.
If your pet's condition worsens or does not improve while using Artificial Tears, discontinue use and contact your veterinarian.
