Chlorhexidine pads are a convenient treatment method for localized bacterial infections. Some dogs with allergies will develop localized bacterial infections on their feet, face, or perineum. These infections will frequently respond to topical management. I find that topical management of bacterial infections with shampoos (e.g. Malaseb), systemic antibiotics (e.g. Primor), and chlorhexidine pads is extremely helpful. Although it is labor intensive to manage a skin condition topically, it is very beneficial. It seems that every veterinarian has a different formula for management of bacterial skin infections, so please be sure to discuss what protocol your veterinarian prefers and stick with it diligently.
If you notice any behavioral or physiological changes in your pet after using chlorhexidine pads, contact your veterinarian immediately.
