Doxycycline Basics
  • Doxycycline is available by prescription only.
  • Doxycycline is a broad-spectrum tetracycline antibiotic used to fight infections.

  • Doxycycline is also known to treat water-borne infections such as leptospirosis.
  • Doxycycline slows down bacterial growth by inhibiting protein synthesis in susceptible organisms, resulting in their death.
  • Doxycycline is available in two strengths:
  • 50 mg
  • 100 mg

Doxycycline Warnings
  • Keep out of the reach of children and pets.
  • Do not use in animals with a known sensitivity to doxycycline.
  • Do not use in pregnant animals.
  • Let your veterinarian know if your pet is on any other medications, as interactions with certain medicines can occur.
  • Do not administer any calcium-containing medications, antacids, laxatives, or multivitamins within 2 hours of the last doxycycline dose.
  • Notify your veterinarian if your animal suffers from kidney or liver disease.
  • Doxycycline may increase skin's sensitivity to sunlight.
  • Store at room temperature.
  • Store protected from light and moisture.


Doxycycline Directions
  • Give as directed by your veterinarian.
  • Follow the instructions printed on the prescription label.
  • Store doxycycline at room temperature.
  • Be sure to complete the prescription to ensure a full recovery, even if your pet seems to be improving, unless instructed otherwise by your veterinarian.
  • Allow your pet access to plenty of water.
  • Doxycycline can be given with or without food but should not be given with dairy products.

Doxycycline Dosage FAQs
  • In the case of a missed dose of doxycycline, give it as soon as you remember or wait until it is time to give the next dose. DO NOT GIVE A DOUBLE DOSE OF DOXYCYCLINE.
  • In the case of an overdose of doxycycline, seek immediate attention from your veterinarian.
