Meropenem is a broad spectrum antibiotic used in dogs and cats. It treats multi-drug resistant urinary tract and soft tissue infections. This antibiotic is similar to imipenem, however, it does not cause seizures and may be more effective against some resistant gram-negative infections. Because it comes in an injectable form, meropenem can be administered more rapidly than some other antibiotics.
Meropenem requires a prescription from your veterinarian. It is available in an injectable form and comes in 1 g vials.
Use as directed by your veterinarian, and follow all instructions printed on the prescription label. Complete the entire prescription unless instructed otherwise by your veterinarian. Dosage and duration of treatment depend on the condition being treated and response to the medication.
Store at room temperature, protected from light and moisture.
Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Do not use in pets with a known hypersensitivity to meropenem or other carbapenems. Use with caution in pets that are pregnant or lactating. Meropenem may also interact with some other medications. Therefore, inform your veterinarian of any and all medications your pet may be taking. This is especially important if your pet is currently taking probenecid. If you notice any behavioral or physiological side effects when administering this medication, contact your veterinarian immediately.
