Meropenem Basics
Meropenem requires a prescription from your veterinarian.
Meropenem is a broad spectrum antibiotic used in dogs and cats.
Meropenem treats multi-drug resistant urinary tract and soft tissue infections.
This antibiotic is similar to imipenem, however, it does not cause seizures and may be more effective against some resistant gram-negative infections.
Because it comes in an injectable form, meropenem can be administered more rapidly than some other antibiotics.

Meropenem Warnings
Keep out of the reach of children and pets.
Do not use in animals with a known hypersensitivity to meropenem or other drugs like it (like ertapenem or imipenem).
Other drugs can react with meropenem, so be sure to tell your veterinarian any medications or supplements that your pet may be on. This is especially important if your pet is currently taking probenecid

Meropenem Directions
Use as directed by your veterinarian.
Follow the instructions printed on the prescription label.
Store at room temperature.
Be sure to complete the prescription to ensure a full recovery, even if your pet seems to be improving or unless you consult with your veterinarian.
Duration of administration depends on the condition being treated, the response to the medication, and the development of any adverse effects.
Unmixed vials may be stored at room temperature protected from light. Mixed vials must be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

In the case of a missed dose of Meropenem, give it as soon as you remember or, if it is close to time for the next dose, wait to give it at the next dose. DO NOT GIVE A DOUBLE DOSE OF MEROPENEM.
In the case of an overdose of Meropenem, seek attention from your veterinarian.
