Ketoconazole

• Ketoconazole is available by prescription only.

• Ketoconazole is an extra-label antifungal used to treat fungal infections.

• Ketoconazole is used to treat:

• Yeast infections

• Fungal infections

• Dermatophyte infections

• Ringworm

• Blastomycosis

• Histoplasmosis

• Coccidioidomycosis

• Cryptococcosis

• Ketoconazole inhibits the growth of fungal organisms by interfering with the formation of the fungal cell wall.

• Ketoconazole is available in 200 mg tablets.

• Keep out of the reach of children and pets.

• Do not use in pets with known hypersensitivity to ketoconazole.

• Do not use in pregnant or nursing animals.

• Dogs taking ketoconazole may develop cataracts.

• Ketoconazole can cause decreased levels of cortisol, testosterone, and other sex hormones that may affect reproduction.

• Notify your veterinarian if your pet is taking any other medications.

• Ketoconazole may interact with other medications. Inform your veterinarian of any and all medications your pet is taking, such as:

• antacids

• cimetidine

• cisapride

• methylprednisolone

• anticonvulsants

• heart medications

• cyclosporine

• theophylline

• Store at room temperature, protected from light and moisture.

• Use as directed by your veterinarian.

• Follow the instructions printed on the prescription label.

• Store ketoconazole at room temperature.

• Be sure to complete the prescription to ensure a full recovery, even if your pet seems to be improving, unless instructed otherwise by your veterinarian.

• Duration of administration depends on the condition being treated, response to the medication, and development of any adverse effects.

• In the case of a missed dose of ketoconazole, give it as soon as you remember or wait until it is time to give the next dose. DO NOT GIVE A DOUBLE DOSE OF KETOCONAZOLE.

• In the case of an overdose of ketoconazole, seek attention from your veterinarian. The following symptoms could be signs of an overdose:

• nausea

• vomiting

• diarrhea

• dizziness

• Adverse reactions and serious side effects are rare, but in the case of an adverse reaction or a serious side effect you should seek immediate veterinary attention.

• Some common signs of allergic reactions and serious side effects are:

• breathing difficulty

• facial swelling

• hives

• liver damage (hepatitis)

• jaundice
