Apoquel is a fast-acting and safe anti-itch treatment for dogs. In fact, this medication provides itch relief within 12 hours of the first dose. It helps control acute and chronic allergic dermatitis as well as atopic dermatitis. The main ingredient, oclacitinib, works by inhibiting certain cytokines. These cytokines play a significant role in inflammation, itching, and allergy processes.
Apoquel requires a prescription from your veterinarian. It is available in three different strengths: 3.6 mg, 5.4 mg, and 16 mg.
Use as directed by your veterinarian, and follow all instructions printed on the prescription label. This medication may be given with or without food. If stomach upset occurs following administration, give tablets with food. Dosage and length of administration varies depending on the condition being treated and response to medication. Complete the entire prescription unless instructed otherwise by your veterinarian.
Store at room temperature, protected from light and moisture.
Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Apoquel is not intended for human use; it is for use in dogs only. Do not use this medication in dogs less than 12 months of age or those with serious infections. Do not use in dogs that are breeding, pregnant, or lactating. Apoquel can increase the chances of developing serious infections. It can also cause existing parasitic skin infections or pre-existing cancers to worsen. This drug may interact with some other medications. Therefore, inform your veterinarian of any and all medications you pet may be taking. This is especially important if your pet is currently taking glucocorticoids, cyclosporine, or other systemic immunosuppressive agents. The most common side effects observed during treatment are vomiting and diarrhea. If you notice these, or any other behavioral or physiological side effects, while administering Apoquel, contact your veterinarian immediately.
