Marquis Basics
  • Marquis is available by prescription only.
  • Marquis contains the active ingredient ponazuril.
  • Marquis is used to treat equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM).
  • EPM is caused by Sarcocystis neurona, a parasite.
  • Marquis kills Sarcocystis neurona.
  • Marquis is an antiprotozoal oral paste for horses.
  • The paste is supplied in ready-to-use syringes.
  • Each syringe contains 127 grams of paste.
  • Each gram of paste contains 150 mg of ponazuril.
  • Marquis comes with a dosage ring to help set the appropriate dose.

Marquis Warnings
  • Keep out of the reach of children and pets.
  • Marquis is for use in horses only.
  • Marquis is not intended for human use.
  • Use with caution in pregnant or nursing horses.
  • Symptoms may worsen when treatment begins.
  • Store at room temperature.
  • Dispose of partially used syringes after treatment.


Marquis Directions
  • Use as directed by your veterinarian.
  • Follow the instructions printed on the prescription label.
  • To use Marquis, remove the cap and apply pressure to the plunger until paste is seen at the tip of the syringe barrel.
  • Return the cap to tip of paste syringe.
  • Determine the weight of your horse.
  • Be sure that your horse’s mouth contains no feed before using Marquis.
  • To ensure the proper dose, the dosage ring collar and barrel collar should be flush.
  • Hold the plunger and rotate the dosage ring with the other hand to match the weight of the horse.
  • Remove the cap from the tip of the syringe.
  • Deposit the dose onto the back and top of the horse’s tongue.
  • Start administering Marquis by putting the syringe tip into the side of your horse’s mouth at the space between the front and back teeth.
  • Deposit the paste onto the horse’s tongue by pressing the plunger of the syringe as far as the dosage ring permits.
  • Remove the tip of the syringe from the horse’s mouth.
  • To help your horse swallow the paste, immediately raise your horse’s head for a few seconds after dosing.
  • Clean the tip of the syringe with a clean disposable towel and return the end cap to the tip of the syringe barrel.

If you notice any behavioral or physiological changes in your horse while giving Marquis, contact your veterinarian immediately.

  • hives
  • scratching
  • sudden onset of diarrhea
  • shock
  • seizures
  • pale gums
  • cold limbs
  • coma
  • After beginning Marquis, symptoms may worsen. This could include a worsening of the loss of control of body movement. Contact your veterinarian if you notice a loss of control of body movement in your horse, as this could be permanent.
